Questions people ask us
A few clear answers to help you decide. If you would like to ask something else, write to us.
For her
What a call is like from her side of the line, and what she is told.
Will she know it isn't me?
On the call she hears your voice, in your words and your way of speaking, and she is not told it is a recording. The consent is yours: you set this up and agree in plain words to what will happen. If she asks whether it is really you, it never argues and never insists. What if she asks if it's really me?
It never argues and never insists. If she asks whether it is really you, it does not push the point; it stays warm, follows her lead and lets the conversation go where she takes it. Why we chose that, and the exact words, are on the ethics and consent page. What if she is upset?
It listens for three levels of distress: mild, moderate and crisis. For each one you choose what happens: no alert, a text to you, or a phone call to you. On the call itself it stays on the line and becomes gentler, and it never tells her she has already asked.Does she need a new phone?
No. Nothing is installed on her side. Any phone that can make a call works: a mobile, a landline, a big-button phone, a tablet that makes calls. You save one dedicated local number in her phone under your name, and she calls you the way she always has. What if she calls at three in the morning?
You choose the weekly answering hours, in her time zone. If three in the morning falls inside them, she hears your voice. If it falls outside them, her call rings your own phone, the way it always has. You might keep the workday and leave the nights for yourself.
For you
Recording, the hours, and what you can see afterwards.
How long does recording take?
One to three minutes, at home, on whatever you have. There are friendly prompts to talk through, or you can read a card, or upload a recording you already have. A new recording takes effect on her next call, so you can redo it whenever you like. Can I change the hours?
Yes, whenever you like. The hours are weekly and set in her time zone, and you can change them from your account at any time. Outside the hours you choose, her calls ring your own phone as usual. Nothing changes on her side; she still calls the one number saved under your name. Can I turn it on for just this afternoon?
Yes. There is a one-tap option to answer for the next one to four hours, when you need some time to yourself. When the time is up it switches itself off, and her calls come back to you without you having to remember. Can I read every call?
Yes, every one. After each call you can see the time, how long it lasted, a one-line summary, a note on her mood and the full transcript. Nothing is hidden from you. If something in a call worries you, the transcript is there to read again. Can two of us record?
An account answers in one voice, and a new recording replaces the last one on her next call. If you and your brother take turns, re-record when the hours change hands.Does it work for two parents?
One loved one per account. Two parents means two accounts, each with its own number, its own recording and its own hours, so schedules for each can be set separately. Write to us or call and we will help you set both up.
Money

Does unused credit carry over?
Yes. Unused credit rolls over every month and never expires. This applies to your monthly subscription credit and any extra credit you add. If you have $4 left when your next $10 of subscription credit arrives, your balance becomes $14.What does $10 buy?
Standard costs $10 a month and includes $10 of call credit each month. Unused credit rolls over and never expires. Calls are 30¢ a minute, so a five-minute call is about $1.50, and the credit covers about 33 minutes of calls. Premium is $20 a month, becomes $20 of credit, and unlocks a richer voice from 30 minutes or more of recording. What is a minute?
A minute of talking on a call, charged at 30¢. A five-minute call is about $1.50. Calls wind down warmly at about five minutes and end by ten, so a single call cannot run away with the credit. You can see what each call cost in your account. Can I cap what I spend?
Yes. Nothing is charged beyond the monthly plan unless you top up, and you choose the amount, from $5 to $500. If you would rather not think about it, set an automatic top-up at a level you are comfortable with. If the credit runs out, her calls simply ring your own phone. Can I cancel?
Yes. Cancel from your account at any time to stop future subscription charges. There is no contract and no notice period. Prices are in CAD in Canada and USD in the United States. You can see every call you made and what it cost, in your account.
Safety and privacy
What happens when something is wrong, and where your voice lives.
What happens in an emergency?
It stays on the line and becomes gentler. It listens for three levels of distress, mild, moderate and crisis, and for each you have chosen in advance whether you want no alert, a text or a phone call. It does not call 911. If you are worried about her safety, call her, a neighbour or emergency services yourself.Does it call 911?
No. It does not call 911 or any emergency number, and it is not a monitoring service. What it can do is alert you, by text or by phone, at the level of distress you chose, while it stays on the line with her. The decision about what to do next is yours.Where is my voice stored?
Your voice setup recordings are kept in encrypted storage on Microsoft Azure. The voice made from them is held by ElevenLabs. Audio recordings of her calls are also kept in ElevenLabs, and written transcripts are available in your account. Contact us about call-audio retention or deletion. Can I delete it?
Yes. Delete your voice setup recordings from your account, or contact us to request deletion of your account data, including call audio kept in ElevenLabs. We confirm when the request is complete. You can also withdraw your consent at any time.
For professionals
For the family physician, the First Link coordinator and the social worker.
Is it a medical device?
No. Voice Companion is not a medical device and makes no clinical claims. It is a familiar voice that answers repetitive calls in the hours a family chooses, and gives the person doing the caring a moment to breathe. It does not diagnose, treat or monitor, and it does not replace care.Who consents?
The family member who records their voice and holds the account. They submit their consent before calls begin and can withdraw it at any time. Calls are recorded, with audio kept in ElevenLabs. The account holder can read written transcripts. How do I refer?
There is nothing to prescribe and no form to fill in. Give the family the address of this site, or of the page written for professionals, and let them decide in their own time. If something printed would help in a clinic, write to us.
